Identifying the Odor and Its Source

A dusty smell at the start of heating season is normal and short-lived. An electrical or hot-metal odor may signal a failing blower motor, overheating wiring, or a control board issue. Melting plastic or rubber points to a component being destroyed — possibly wire insulation, a belt, or a foreign object lodged in the ductwork. A gunpowder-like scent often indicates a shorted capacitor or another electrical component. An oily smell from a furnace may mean a fuel leak or combustion fault.

Knowing When to Shut Down and Call
