The draft inducer motor is the first component to activate in the heating cycle. It spins up to create negative pressure inside the heat exchanger and venting path, pulling combustion gases safely out through the flue. The ignition sequence will not proceed until the pressure switch confirms adequate draft. If the draft inducer stalls, fails, or cannot generate enough draw, the furnace locks out as a safety measure — it simply will not fire.

Warning Signs Before Complete Failure

A draft inducer motor usually gives advance notice before it dies. You may hear pronounced humming, rattling, or a high-pitched whine just before the furnace lights. Startup may take noticeably longer, or the furnace may cycle through several attempts before the pressure switch finally closes.
