What Is a SEER Rating?
SEER (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio) quantifies how efficiently an AC or heat pump cools over a full cooling season. A higher SEER number means less electricity consumed for the same cooling output. The current federal minimum for the Southeast region is 14 SEER.
When an Upgrade Pays Off
If your current system is 10+ years old and rated below 14 SEER, stepping up to a 16–18 SEER model can recoup its cost within 5–8 years through energy savings alone. Federal tax credits and manufacturer rebates can shorten that payback period further.
