How AC Tonnage Is Determined
Air conditioner capacity is expressed in tons — each ton removes 12,000 BTU of heat per hour. For Western North Carolina (climate zone 4, mixed-humid), a starting estimate is roughly 25 BTU per square foot. This calculator then adjusts for ceiling height, insulation quality, and how much direct sunlight the home receives.
Why Proper Sizing Matters
An undersized system runs all day without reaching setpoint on hot afternoons. An oversized system cycles on and off too frequently, leaving indoor humidity high and increasing compressor wear. Correct sizing delivers lower utility bills, consistent comfort, and a longer equipment lifespan.
