Mini Split vs. Central Air

The right choice between a ductless mini-split and a central air system depends on three things: your home's existing infrastructure, your comfort priorities, and your budget. Quality Mechanical installs both technologies, which means our recommendation is driven by your situation — not by what we have in stock. Central air is the stronger option when your home has ductwork that is in solid condition, you prefer whole-home control from a single thermostat, and you value the simplicity of one outdoor unit serving the entire house. Per-square-foot installation cost is generally lower with central air when usable ducts are already in place. Ductless mini-splits are the better fit when your home lacks ductwork entirely (common in older and historic WNC properties), you are adding a room, finishing a basement, or converting a garage, a particular room consistently runs too hot or cold for central air to solve, you want independent temperature control in each zone, or you need to condition a detached space like a workshop, studio, or seasonal cabin. Mini-splits carry a higher per-square-foot install cost but deliver better efficiency and granular zone control. In practice, many older Asheville bungalows and craftsman homes without ductwork are best served by a multi-zone mini-split system — it is often the most cost-effective route to whole-home comfort when the alternative involves installing entirely new ductwork. Homes with existing ducts in good shape are typically better candidates for central air. Quality Mechanical assesses both paths on every visit.

How This Applies to Homes in Western NC

Home age and layout tend to drive this decision in WNC. Pre-1960s homes in Asheville and Marshall often have no ductwork at all, making mini-splits the clear winner. Newer construction in Hendersonville, Fletcher, and Arden with intact duct systems will usually get the best value from central air. If your existing ducts are deteriorated — a common issue in older mountain homes — installing mini-splits may cost less than duct replacement plus a central AC unit.
